From former British barrister John Burdett comes a psychosexual novel in the tradition of Damage and Presumed Innocent. At the heart of A Personal History of Thirst is an ill-fated love triangle where all hunger for something and are willing to risk everything to get it, blurring th eboundaries between right and wrong and love and hate to do so. Thirst tells a gripping tale of murder,r evenge, infidelity, ambition, and deception that keeps shocking until the stunning courtroom climax. Ambitious London lawyer James Knight, a propserous solciitor, has denied his lower-class background and carefully molded his publci image in order to climb the social and professional ladder of the British legal system. He will soon "take silk"—become a Queen's counsel barrister, the highest rank a alwyer can obtain.
More than decade earlier, however, James had lived on the fringe of acceptable society and rigid British ethics during his years at university, experimenting with sex and drugs in a passionate love affair with a stunning and brilliant American named Daisy Smith.
James's life takes an unexpected turn early in his career when he meets a client—an accused thief named Oliver Thirst—for a drink and a chat in a pub. Although they could not be more different, James is drawn to Thirst's high intelligence and wit. Soon their illicit friendship develops into a dark and erotic ménage á trois with Daisy at the center.
Now, eleven years later, one is dead and two are suspected of murder. The murder investigation at the center of this impossible-to-put-down novel uncovers the bizarre love story between the barrister, the American, and the thief. And, in the end, A Personal History of Thirst answers the question What happens when genuine love becomes mixed with perverse obsession?

I enjoy reading Burdett's work. Started with Bangkok 8. After I bought my third copy (no one brings my books back), I started reading the others I could find that he'd written. A Personal History of Thirst is one I purchased to keep up with his work. It's not a standard crime story. There is a crime, and there are criminals. But they don't come together in what I would consider a standard fashion.
And to a large extent, this is the watermark of a Burdett novel. There's always something unexpected and strange. Sometimes it's overt, sometimes it's more nuanced, and in some cases, you get pretty much the entire range. This one is not one of them.
The characters are not likeable people overall, and that makes it a bit harder to get engaged with the story. The story itself, though, keeps the reader interested enough to make finishing almost compulsory. You nearly HAVE to know what happened, even though at some points you almost don't want to. Some of this is difficult to read - some of the activities alluded to are pretty unpleasant. Burdett doesn't shy from this sort of thing as a general rule. But you will have to finish it. The end is of course unexpectedly twisted. Burdett manages to tie all the strings together so well with it, though, that you're nearly surprised by your own surprise.
Not my favorite Burdett novel, but good, nonetheless.

A Personal History of Thirst edition by John Burdett Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

I very much enjoy Burdett's style and storylines, and I was happy to find this thriller. Very well written noir tale, too bad its difficult to obtain. Highly recommended.
First read the this book several years ago. Enjoyed rereading it.
I've liked all of Burdett's books. Take a look at the Bangkok series.
A deep ,look into the practice of law at the bar and the minds of recidivist criminals, their prosecutors and defence . Incorporating amusing insights into the old boy network of older lawyers, and a good story as well.
I thoroughly enjoyed Burdett's ensemble in Bangkok and almost made it through the Hong Kong book before I had to return it to the library - which I will pick up upon return in June - so for me it is more than a little fascinating to see his earliest published work. If anything his work here started out more complex and nuanced (well he was an attorney after all) and has become somewhat more relaxed (though still marvelously nuanced) as he has further practiced his craft i.e. Bangkok 8, etc. The only thing I am sure of is the world is a better place that he has found writing in lieu of law as his calling.
I love Burdett's respect for the language, his ability to snag your interest, his astuteness in describing the human condition...I could go on and on.He'snever let me down and this is one of his best.
Burdett continues to provide stories filled with experience mixed with surprise twists. Having read all his other published works, I found this book and it did not disappoint. Characters come to life in this murder mystery where stereotypes are tipped upside down and the story rushes to the final pages as the reader is kept on the edge of his/her seat on this wild ride.
I admire John Burdett's ability to weave a complex picture of human interaction. Burdett has an amazing facility for cultural context, whether it be in Thailand (Bangkok) or Hong Kong (The Last Six Million Seconds). This one is set in London, which is less familiar to me culturally than the other two, i.e. I'm less able to appreciate how the characters relate to each other. The book is deeply disturbing in its treatment of relationships driven by sexuality and insecurity. My use of "disturbing" is not a criticism of the writer's art. Quite the contrary be prepared to examine yourself and your relationships as you read this book.
